Sometimes you just crave a middle grade. Something whimsical, something ridiculous, full of adventure, magic and just drift off in another world that doesn’t need you to keep track of some silly politics. Luckily, the author contacted me if I wanted to read her book and after reading the description, I couldn’t wait to read it!
Your world isn’t the only one that exists. There is another, a magical place called Bar-Ran, and it’s about to be destroyed unless the Morgan children can find the royal dragon and replace its heart.
Now, is this book perfect? No. Absolutely not. It isn’t the new Morrigan Crow, it isn’t the new anything, but it was fun and that’s the most important thing to me.
I really liked the fact that all 5 of the children were really fleshed out, but I especially loved Meredith, as she’s the oldest and so am I. Everything she did, every worry she had, is exactly how I felt. However, she read a lot older than she actually was, the amount of responsibility she has is incredibly unhealthy for such a young girl! Also, the grandma. Can we take a moment to appreciate Nana Hats because I’m 90% sure that she’s my future.
I loved seeing what inspired the author, there were lots of references to movies and books in it, it made it seem like it was a little scavenger hunt in the book as well. Now, I don’t mind an author being inspired by other things, we all need to get our ideas from somewhere, the story itself was still a lot of fun, and I’m looking at it with my adult eyes, when this book is not meant for me, it’s meant for children! So if you are an adult wanting to read this book, just know that just because you can see these, that doesn’t really mean the children can too. 😉
Long story short: is this something new and exciting that will change the world? No. Was it a lot of fun? Yes! And that’s what matters most to me, especially in middle grade. 🙂
I gave this 4 stars on Goodreads.
