Reading Wrap- Up: September 2018

I really need to find an image to go with these blogposts! Today we are going to talk about the smallest wrap up I’ve done so far this year!

Books read: 6 (non-fiction: 1, detective: 2, classic: 1, children’s: 1, historical fiction: 1)
Stars: 1 (0), 2 (1), 3 (3), 4 (2), 5 (0)

35886963the Paddington Mystery by John Rhode
A really interesting idea: our main-character gets home one night after a night of pity drinking, to come home and find a dead man in his bed! What happened? Who did this? Again, the idea is really interesting, but the execution was all right! The writing wasn’t amazing, the dialogue wasn’t groundbreaking and the mystery wasn’t that mysterious. An enjoyable read, but that’s where it stops! I gave this 3 stars on Goodreads.

36502254Nightmare Abbey by Thomas Love Peacock
I bought this book because of my best friend. It’s his favourite book! Unfortunately, I could only get one with the Castle of Otranto and Vathek in it. I didn’t like those stories, but I’m not going to talk about that! Nightmare Abbey is absolutely hilarious. Like, utterly hilarious. Especially if you like gothic literature. It isn’t my favourite book, but I really enjoyed it! The story itself got 4 stars from me! The book 3, as the other books were in it.

6769186Fashion in the Time of Jane Austen by Jane Downing
I hate this book. It annoyed me SO MUCH. Ok, when I read the title I thought it would be about fashion in the time of Jane Austen, you know, like, the clothes she would’ve worn and other people, but NO, almost the entire book it’s about what the women and men wore in her B-O-O-K-S. And in case you don’t know, I really DISLIKE Jane Austen’s work. Maybe it’s my own fault, but the synopsis pretends like the book is about the time period, not the books, but alas. ALAS. It was boring, too much Jane Austen, and just nope thank you. I gave it 2 stars.

38220279Dear Mrs. Bird by A. J. Pearce
Oh lord I HOPE with all my might that there’s going to be more of this! This book was amazing. Set during the second world war, Emmeline gets a job as a helper for Mrs. Bird, a horrid lady that gives advice in a women’s magazine. Emmeline is hilarious, she’s sweet, she’s amazing and I need more of her in my life. This isn’t the best book ever, but it was so amazingly enjoyable and that is the most important thing to me. And it’s historically accurate, which isn’t bad either! I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads.

48795Password to Larkspur Lane by Carolyn Keene
Last time I read Nancy Drew I was wondering if I actually didn’t like them anymore because I grew up. Fortunately, I was wrong! This was one of my favourite thus far! The story was really ridiculous and fun, as Nancy Drew stories should be! Honestly, most of them are the same, but this one was just enjoyable! I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads.

21926890the Labours of Hercules by Agatha Christie
I’m almost done with Poirot! Unfortunately, this isn’t my favourite. It was fine, but don’t start with this one if you want to learn about Poirot. The stories were silly, some were REALLY far fetched and just meh. I gave it 3 stars though, as I really enjoyed reading it, but this just isn’t the best!

What was your favourite book this month? 🙂
