Review: the Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night by Jen Campbell

40227609I’ve been watching Jen for a long time now, an after really liking her other books, I had to try out her short story collection! In case you didn’t know, I have a huge obsession with fairy tales, and hopefully one day I will write my own book about them. Jen and I share that love, so this book being inspired by fairy tales is just the right one for me!

‘These days, you can find anything you need at the click of a button.
That’s why I bought her heart online.’

Spirits in jam jars, mini-apocalypses, animal hearts and side shows.
A girl runs a coffin hotel on a remote island.
A boy is worried his sister has two souls.
A couple are rewriting the history of the world.
And mermaids are on display at the local aquarium.

The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night is a collection of twelve haunting stories; modern fairy tales brimming with magic, outsiders and lost souls.

This short story collection is either I LOVE IT SO MUCH or MEH, there isn’t really a middle. I really loved the firs three stories, they were amazing and made a really strong entrance into the book. It made the other stories look pretty meh in comparison, I think that if we started with the meh stories, they wouldn’t have felt that bad. That is worded wrongly, all of these stories were fun and pretty good (some better than others) none of them were BAD, but each compared to each other there were just some ones I wouldn’t have put in it, you get me? This book even made me cry at one point, which says a lot because I just don’t cry!!

The stories were all mostly unfinished. You kind of start in the middle of the story, things have happened before and there’s a small hint to it, but nothing gets explained and we just get an ending, and most of them are unsatisfying. This can be a REAL hit or miss for someone. To me, I loved it! I really love the way that it’s written. It makes me keep on reading, and I finished this book in one setting! It might really annoy you though, because you want more. Just be warned about that!

Another thing, on a serious note, there are a few trigger warnings for this book. For some reason I haven’t seen anyone talking about this??? But there’s a trigger warning for eating disorders, sexual abuse (which isn’t explicit, but it’s there) and there’s animal abuse. Especially the first two made me REALLY uncomfortable. But the TW’s are only for the stories Margaret and Mary, and Sea Devils. Other than that, this book is safe for everyone!

All in all, I really loved this book! I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads, because I enjoyed it that much. I totally recommend it, but just be aware that you are either going to love it, or hate it! You can get your copy here!
